AMD's Growing CPU Advantage Over Intel Mar. 1.18 | About: Advanced Micro (AMD)

AMD is primarily a CPU fabrication company with much experience and a great history in that respect. They hold patents for 64-bit processing, as well as ARM based processing patents, and GPU architecture patents. AMD built a name for itself in the mid-to-late 90’s when they introduced the K-series CPU’s to good reviews followed by the Athlon series in ‘99. AMD was profitable, they bought the companies NexGen, Alchemy Semiconductor, and ATI. Past Economic Hazards If AMD has such a great history, then what happened? Before I go over the technical advantage that AMD has over Intel, it’s worth looking to see how AMD failed in the past, and to see if those hazards still present a risk to AMD. As for investment purposes we’re more interested in AMD’s turning a profit. AMD suffered from intermittent CPU fabrication problems, and was also the victim of sustained anti-competitive behaviour from Intel who interfered with AMD’s attempts to sell its CPU’s to the market through Sony, Hitachi, Toshiba, Fujitsu, NEC, Dell, Gateway, HP, Acer, and Lenovo. Intel was investigated and/or fined by multiple countries including Japan, Korea, USA, and EU. These hazard needs to be examined to see if history will repeat itself. There have been some rather large changes in the market since then.
1) The EU has shown they are not averse to leveling large fines, and Intel is still fighting the guilty verdict from the last EU fine levied against them; they’ve already lost one appeal. It’s conceivable to expect that the EU, and other countries, would prosecute Intel again. This is compounded by the recent security problems with Intel CPU’s and the fact that Intel sold these CPU’s under false advertising as secure when Intel knew they were not. Here are some of the largest fines dished out by the EU
2) The Internet has evolved from Web 1.0 to 2.0. Consumers are increasing their online presence each year. This reduces the clout that Intel can wield over the market as AMD can more easily sell to consumers through smaller Internet based companies.
3) Traditional distributors (HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc.) are struggling. All of these companies have had recent issues with declining revenue due to Internet competition, and ARM competition. These companies are struggling for sales and this reduces the clout that Intel has over them, as Intel is no longer able to ensure their future. It no longer pays to be in the club. These points are summarized in the graph below, from Statista, which shows “ODM Direct” sales and “other sales” increasing their market share from 2009 to Q3 2017. 4) AMD spun off Global Foundries as a separate company. AMD has a fabrication agreement with Global Foundries, but is also free to fabricate at another foundry such as TSMC, where AMD has recently announced they will be printing Vega at 7nm.
5) Global Foundries developed the capability to fabricate at 16nm, 14nm, and 12nm alongside Samsung, and IBM, and bought the process from IBM to fabricate at 7nm. These three companies have been cooperating to develop new fabrication nodes.
6) The computer market has grown much larger since the mid-90’s – 2006 when AMD last had a significant tangible advantage over Intel, as computer sales rose steadily until 2011 before starting a slow decline, see Statista graph below. The decline corresponds directly to the loss of competition in the marketplace between AMD and Intel, when AMD released the Bulldozer CPU in 2011. Tablets also became available starting in 2010 and contributed to the fall in computer sales which started falling in 2012. It’s important to note that computer shipments did not fall in 2017, they remained static, and AMD’s GPU market share rose in Q4 2017 at the expense of Nvidia and Intel.
7) In terms of fabrication, AMD has access to 7nm on Global Foundries as well as through TSMC. It’s unlikely that AMD will experience CPU fabrication problems in the future. This is something of a reversal of fortunes as Intel is now experiencing issues with its 10nm fabrication facilities which are behind schedule by more than 2 years, and maybe longer. It would be costly for Intel to use another foundry to print their CPU’s due to the overhead that their current foundries have on their bottom line. If Intel is unable to get the 10nm process working, they’re going to have difficulty competing with AMD. AMD: Current market conditions In 2011 AMD released its Bulldozer line of CPU’s to poor reviews and was relegated to selling on the discount market where sales margins are low. Since that time AMD’s profits have been largely determined by the performance of its GPU and Semi-Custom business. Analysts have become accustomed to looking at AMD’s revenue from a GPU perspective, which isn’t currently being seen in a positive light due to the relation between AMD GPU’s and cryptocurrency mining.
The market views cryptocurrency as further risk to AMD. When Bitcoin was introduced it was also mined with GPU’s. When the currency switched to ASIC circuits (a basic inexpensive and simple circuit) for increased profitability (ASIC’s are cheaper because they’re simple), the GPU’s purchased for mining were resold on the market and ended up competing with and hurting new AMD GPU sales. There is also perceived risk to AMD from Nvidia which has favorable reviews for its Pascal GPU offerings. While AMD has been selling GPU’s they haven’t increased GPU supply due to cryptocurrency demand, while Nvidia has. This resulted in a very high cost for AMD GPU’s relative to Nvidia’s. There are strategic reasons for AMD’s current position:
1) While the AMD GPU’s are profitable and greatly desired for cryptocurrency mining, AMD’s market access is through 3rd party resellers whom enjoy the revenue from marked-up GPU sales. AMD most likely makes lower margins on GPU sales relative to the Zen CPU sales due to higher fabrication costs associated with the fabrication of larger size dies and the corresponding lower yield. For reference I’ve included the size of AMD’s and Nvidia’s GPU’s as well as AMD’s Ryzen CPU and Intel’s Coffee lake 8th generation CPU. This suggests that if AMD had to pick and choose between products, they’d focus on Zen due higher yield and revenue from sales and an increase in margin.
2) If AMD maintained historical levels of GPU production in the face of cryptocurrency demand, while increasing production for Zen products, they would maximize potential income for highest margin products (EPYC), while reducing future vulnerability to second-hand GPU sales being resold on the market. 3) AMD was burned in the past from second hand GPU’s and want to avoid repeating that experience. AMD stated several times that the cryptocurrency boom was not factored into forward looking statements, meaning they haven’t produced more GPU’s to expect more GPU sales.
In contrast, Nvidia increased its production of GPU’s due to cryptocurrency demand, as AMD did in the past. Since their Pascal GPU has entered its 2nd year on the market and is capable of running video games for years to come (1080p and 4k gaming), Nvidia will be entering a position where they will be competing directly with older GPU’s used for mining, that are as capable as the cards Nvidia is currently selling. Second-hand GPU’s from mining are known to function very well, with only a need to replace the fan. This is because semiconductors work best in a steady state, as opposed to being turned on and off, so it will endure less wear when used 24/7.
The market is also pessimistic regarding AMD’s P/E ratio. The market is accustomed to evaluating stocks using the P/E ratio. This statistical test is not actually accurate in evaluating new companies, or companies going into or coming out of bankruptcy. It is more accurate in evaluating companies that have a consistent business operating trend over time.
“Similarly, a company with very low earnings now may command a very high P/E ratio even though it isn’t necessarily overvalued. The company may have just IPO’d and growth expectations are very high, or expectations remain high since the company dominates the technology in its space.” P/E Ratio: Problems With The P/E I regard the pessimism surrounding AMD stock due to GPU’s and past history as a positive trait, because the threat is minor. While AMD is experiencing competitive problems with its GPU’s in gaming AMD holds an advantage in Blockchain processing which stands to be a larger and more lucrative market. I also believe that AMD’s progress with Zen, particularly with EPYC and the recent Meltdown related security and performance issues with all Intel CPU offerings far outweigh any GPU turbulence. This turns the pessimism surrounding AMD regarding its GPU’s into a stock benefit. 1) A pessimistic group prevents the stock from becoming a bubble. -It provides a counter argument against hype relating to product launches that are not proven by earnings. Which is unfortunately a historical trend for AMD as they have had difficulty selling server CPU’s, and consumer CPU’s in the past due to market interference by Intel. 2) It creates predictable daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly fluctuations in the stock price that can be used, to generate income. 3) Due to recent product launches and market conditions (Zen architecture advantage, 12nm node launching, Meltdown performance flaw affecting all Intel CPU’s, Intel’s problems with 10nm) and the fact that AMD is once again selling a competitive product, AMD is making more money each quarter. Therefore the base price of AMD’s stock will rise with earnings, as we’re seeing. This is also a form of investment security, where perceived losses are returned over time, due to a stock that is in a long-term upward trajectory due to new products reaching a responsive market.
4) AMD remains a cheap stock. While it’s volatile it’s stuck in a long-term upward trend due to market conditions and new product launches. An investor can buy more stock (with a limited budget) to maximize earnings. This is advantage also means that the stock is more easily manipulated, as seen during the Q3 2017 ER.
5) The pessimism is unfounded. The cryptocurrency craze hasn’t died, it increased – fell – and recovered. The second hand market did not see an influx of mining GPU’s as mining remains profitable.
6) Blockchain is an emerging market, that will eclipse the gaming market in size due to the wide breath of applications across various industries. Vega is a highly desired product for Blockchain applications as AMD has retained a processing and performance advantage over Nvidia. There are more and rapidly growing applications for Blockchain every day, all (or most) of which will require GPU’s. For instance Microsoft, The Golem supercomputer, IBM, HP, Oracle, Red Hat, and others. Long-term upwards trend AMD is at the beginning of a long-term upward trend supported by a comprehensive and competitive product portfolio that is still being delivered to the market, AMD referred to this as product ramping. AMD’s most effective products with Zen is EPYC, and the Raven Ridge APU. EPYC entered the market in mid-December and was completely sold out by mid-January, but has since been restocked. Intel remains uncompetitive in that industry as their CPU offerings are retarded by a 40% performance flaw due to Meltdown patches. Server CPU sales command the highest margins for both Intel and AMD.
The AMD Raven Ridge APU was recently released to excellent reviews. The APU is significant due to high GPU prices driven buy cryptocurrency, and the fact that the APU is a CPU/GPU hybrid which has the performance to play games available today at 1080p. The APU also supports the Vulcan API, which can call upon multiple GPU’s to increase performance, so a system can be upgraded with an AMD or Nvidia GPU that supports Vulcan API at a later date for increased performance for those games or workloads that been programmed to support it. Or the APU can be replaced when the prices of GPU’s fall.
AMD also stands to benefit as Intel confirmed that their new 10 nm fabrication node is behind in technical capability relative to the Samsung, TSMC, and Global Foundries 7 nm fabrication process. This brings into questions Intel’s competitiveness in 2019 and beyond. Take-Away • AMD was uncompetitive with respect to CPU’s from 2011 to 2017 • When AMD was competitive, from 1996 to 2011 they did record profit and bought 3 companies including ATI. • AMD CPU business suffered from: • Market manipulation from Intel. • Intel fined by EU, Japan, Korea, and settled with the USA • Foundry productivity and upgrade complications • AMD has changed • Global Foundries spun off as an independent business • Has developed 14nm &12nm, and is implementing 7nm fabrication • Intel late on 10nm, is less competitive than 7nm node • AMD to fabricate products using multiple foundries (TSMC, Global Foundries) • The market has changed • More AMD products are available on the Internet and both the adoption of the Internet and the size of the Internet retail market has exploded, thanks to the success of smartphones and tablets. • Consumer habits have changed, more people shop online each year. Traditional retailers have lost market share. • Computer market is larger (on-average), but has been declining. While Computer shipments declined in Q2 and Q3 2017, AMD sold more CPU’s. • AMD was uncompetitive with respect to CPU’s from 2011 to 2017. • Analysts look to GPU and Semi-Custom sales for revenue. • Cryptocurrency boom intensified, no crash occurred. • AMD did not increase GPU production to meet cryptocurrency demand. • Blockchain represents a new growth potential for AMD GPU’s. • Pessimism acts as security against a stock bubble & corresponding bust. • Creates cyclical volatility in the stock that can be used to generate profit. • P/E ratio is misleading when used to evaluate AMD. • AMD has long-term growth potential. • 2017 AMD releases competitive product portfolio. • Since Zen was released in March 2017 AMD has beat ER expectations. • AMD returns to profitability in 2017. • AMD taking measureable market share from Intel in OEM CPU Desktop and in CPU market. • High margin server product EPYC released in December 2017 before worst ever CPU security bug found in Intel CPU’s that are hit with detrimental 40% performance patch. • Ryzen APU (Raven Ridge) announced in February 2018, to meet gaming GPU shortage created by high GPU demand for cryptocurrency mining. • Blockchain is a long-term growth opportunity for AMD. • Intel is behind the competition for the next CPU fabrication node. AMD’s growing CPU advantage over Intel About AMD’s Zen Zen is a technical breakthrough in CPU architecture because it’s a modular design and because it is a small CPU while providing similar or better performance than the Intel competition.
Since Zen was released in March 2017, we’ve seen AMD go from 18% CPU market share in the OEM consumer desktops to essentially 50% market share, this was also supported by comments from Lisa Su during the Q3 2017 ER call, by MindFactory.de, and by Amazon sales of CPU’s. We also saw AMD increase its market share of total desktop CPU’s. We also started seeing market share flux between AMD and Intel as new CPU’s are released. Zen is a technical breakthrough supported by a few general guidelines relating to electronics. This provides AMD with an across the board CPU market advantage over Intel for every CPU market addressed.
1) The larger the CPU the lower the yield. - Zen architecture that makes up Ryzen, Threadripper, and EPYC is smaller (44 mm2 compared to 151 mm2 for Coffee Lake). A larger CPU means fewer CPU’s made during fabrication per wafer. AMD will have roughly 3x the fabrication yield for each Zen printed compared to each Coffee Lake printed, therefore each CPU has a much lower cost of manufacturing.
2) The larger the CPU the harder it is to fabricate without errors. - The chance that a CPU will be perfectly fabricated falls exponentially with increasing surface area. Intel will have fewer high quality CPU’s printed compared to AMD. This means that AMD will make a higher margin on each CPU sold. AMD’s supply of perfect printed Ryzen’s (1800X) are so high that the company had to give them away at a reduced cost in order to meet supply demands for the cheaper Ryzen 5 1600X. If you bought a 1600X in August/September, you probably ended up with an 1800X.
3) Larger CPU’s are harder to fabricate without errors on smaller nodes. -The technical capability to fabricate CPU’s at smaller nodes becomes more difficult due to the higher precision that is required to fabricate at a smaller node, and due to the corresponding increase in errors. “A second reason for the slowdown is that it’s simply getting harder to design, inspect and test chips at advanced nodes. Physical effects such as heat, electrostatic discharge and electromagnetic interference are more pronounced at 7nm than at 28nm. It also takes more power to drive signals through skinny wires, and circuits are more sensitive to test and inspection, as well as to thermal migration across a chip. All of that needs to be accounted for and simulated using multi-physics simulation, emulation and prototyping.“ Is 7nm The Last Major Node? “Simply put, the first generation of 10nm requires small processors to ensure high yields. Intel seems to be putting the smaller die sizes (i.e. anything under 15W for a laptop) into the 10nm Cannon Lake bucket, while the larger 35W+ chips will be on 14++ Coffee Lake, a tried and tested sub-node for larger CPUs. While the desktop sits on 14++ for a bit longer, it gives time for Intel to further develop their 10nm fabrication abilities, leading to their 10+ process for larger chips by working their other large chip segments (FPGA, MIC) first.” There are plenty of steps where errors can be created within a fabricated CPU. This is most likely the culprit behind Intel’s inability to launch its 10nm fabrication process. They’re simply unable to print such a large CPU on such a small node with high enough yields to make the process competitive. Intel thought they were ahead of the competition with respect to printing large CPU’s on a small node, until AMD avoided the issue completely by designing a smaller modular CPU. Intel avoided any mention of its 10nm node during its Q4 2017 ER, which I interpret as bad news for Intel shareholders. If you have nothing good to say, then you don’t say anything. Intel having nothing to say about something that is fundamentally critical to its success as a company can’t be good. Intel is on track however to deliver hybrid CPU’s where some small components are printed on 10nm. It’s recently also come to light that Intel’s 10nm node is less competitive than the Global Foundries, Samsung, and TSMC 7nm nodes, which means that Intel is now firmly behind in CPU fabrication. 4) AMD Zen is a new architecture built from the ground up. Intel’s CPU’s are built on-top of older architecture developed with 30-yr old strategies, some of which we’ve recently discovered are flawed. This resulted in the Meltdown flaw, the Spectre flaws, and also includes the ME, and AMT bugs in Intel CPU’s. AMD stock drivers 1) EPYC • -A critically acclaimed CPU that is sold at a discount compared to Intel. • -Is not affected by 40% software slow-downs due to Meltdown. 2) Raven Ridge desktop APU • - Targets unfed GPU market which has been stifled due to cryptocurrency demand - Customers can upgrade to a new CPU or add a GPU at a later date without changing the motherboard. • - AM4 motherboard supported until 2020. 3) Vega GPU sales to Intel for 8th generation CPU’s with integrated graphics. • - AMD gains access to the complete desktop and mobile market through Intel.
4) Mobile Ryzen APU sales • -Providing gaming capability in a compact power envelope.
5) Ryzen and Threadripper sales • -Fabricated on 12nm in April. • -May eliminate Intel’s last remaining CPU advantage in IPC single core processing. • -AM4 motherboard supported until 2020. • -7nm Ryzen on track for early 2019. 6) Others: Vega, Polaris, Semi-custom, etc. • -I consider any positive developments here to be gravy. Conclusion While in the past Intel interfered with AMD's ability to bring it's products to market, the market has changed. The internet has grown significantly and is now a large market that dominates when in computer sales. It's questionable if Intel still has the influence to affect this new market, and doing so would most certainly result in fines and further bad press.
AMD's foundry problems were turned into an advantage over Intel.
AMD's more recent past was heavily influenced by the failure of the Bulldozer line of CPU's that dragged on AMD's bottom line from 2011 to 2017.
AMD's Zen line of CPU's is a breakthrough that exploits an alternative, superior strategy, in chip design which results in a smaller CPU. A smaller CPU enjoys compounded yield and quality advantages over Intel's CPU architecture. Intel's lead in CPU performance will at the very least be challenged and will more likely come to an end in 2018, until they release a redesigned CPU.
I previously targeted AMD to be worth $20 by the end of Q4 2017 ER. This was based on the speed that Intel was able to get products to market, in comparison AMD is much slower. I believe the stock should be there, but the GPU related story was prominent due to cryptocurrency craze. Financial analysts need more time to catch on to what’s happening with AMD, they need an ER that is driven by CPU sales. I believe that the Q1 2018 is the ER to do that. AMD had EPYC stock in stores when the Meltdown and Spectre flaws hit the news. These CPU’s were sold out by mid-January and are large margin sales.
There are many variables at play within the market, however barring any disruptions I’d expect that AMD will be worth $20 at some point in 2018 due these market drivers. If AMD sold enough EPYC CPU’s due to Intel’s ongoing CPU security problems, then it may occur following the ER in Q1 2018. However, if anything is customary with AMD, it’s that these things always take longer than expected.

How To Mine Doge with Ubuntu 13.10. (Part 1, for AMD Graphics Cards)

I feel the community really needs a resource like this. Because if I had a Doge for every-time taught a newbie how to Mine on Ubuntu, I would be a very rich doge!
EDIT: Sorry if it looks funny, Reddit doesn't like the numbers I put in for some reason.
If you have Ubuntu you have likely not upgraded because you think you cant mine on 13.10, and while that has been true in the past, a few people have got it figured out. So feel free to upgrade. If you are not on Ubuntu, Seriously you should consider using it. Even if its just on an older desktop.
Alright, so lets get a few things clear, I am assuming that you just FRESHLY installed Ubuntu 13.10 x64 on your system. I am assuming that you have no drivers, and no miners. You will need at least a key board and a mouse. The guide will be done in several parts, this first part is for most AMD Graphics cards. If you have an Nvidia, or just want to mine with your CPU, please check back later for those guides!
When reading this guide, please remember that as I give you commands to type into the terminal, Anything between { and} must be included. Do not copy and paste the {}.
Lets get started, If you have not already done so, Install Ubuntu 13.10 64Bit From Here (http://www.ubuntu.com/index_asus.html)
*1. Lets start by making sure you are up to date. Open up the terminal and enter this:
{sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade} 
Let that run for a bit.
*2. Once that has finished we are going to download some applications we will need:
{sudo apt-get install dh-make dh-modaliases execstack libxrandr2 libice6 libsm6 libfontconfig1 libxi6 libxcursor1 libgl1-mesa-glx libxinerama1 libqtgui4} 
*3. Once that has run its course we are going to install the ssh server. Remember this command is going to make your computer shut down. While it is shut down, carefully install your graphics cards. If you don't have any experience with this, I suggest you 3 minutes to watch this guide, because failure to install a graphics card the right way can destroy it.

*4.Install your Card(s) and turn the computer back on.
*5. Make a new folder called "AMD DRIVERS123" inside of your download folder. Downoad the following 3 things into that folder. (1. AMD Drivers: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/incomplete) (2. AMD APP SDK: http://developer.amd.com/tools-and-sdks/heterogeneous-computing/amd-accelerated-parallel-processing-app-sdk/downloads/) (3. AMD ADL SDK:http://developer.amd.com/tools-and-sdks/graphics-development/display-library-adl-sdk/)
*6. Ok, now we need to unzip and compile those drivers. So, open a terminal my right clicking inside of "AMD DRIVERS123". The enter this:
{unzip amd-catalyst*.zip chmod +x amd-catalyst*.run} {sudo ./amd-catalyst*.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/saucy} 
*7. Now we need to install the drivers. Enter the code exactly as you see it, don't worry, the first command will fail, we are expecting it too.
{sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb} {sudo apt-get -f install} {sudo dpkg -i fglrx*.deb} {sudo reboot} 
Your computer should now reboot.
(If this failed, you probibly need to remove the old drivers. Do this
{cd /etc/default sudo pico grub} 
Change the line:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset" 
Now save by pressing [CTRL+x]
{sudo update-grub} this will make the change perminent. {sudo reboot -n} Reboot with new settings. Once it starts back up try installing the new drivers again.) 
*8.GREAT! You are really on a roll! Now we need to update AtiConfig
{sudo aticonfig --initial --adapter=all} 
*9.Time to install the APP ADK:
{tar xvf AMD-APP-SDK*.tgz} {sudo ./Install-AMD-APP.sh} {sudo reboot} 
*10. WOOT! You are so close to diggin that sweet Doge!! Its time to download CGMiner. IMPORTANT NOTE! You need to get CGminer 3.7, IT IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WILL WORK. Do not get any older or newer, Just this. :
{sudo apt-get install git unzip git clone -b 3.7 https://github.com/ckolivas/cgminer} 
*11. Ok, now go back to "AMD DRIVERS123", Unzip AMD SDL SDK 6.0. Once you have it unzipped, go the file called "include", open it up, copy everything inside, then go find CGminer. Copy these files into the CGminer file called ADL_SDK.
*12. To install CGminer, we are going to need a few things. Get all of these.
{sudo apt-get install build-essential autoconf libtool libcurl4-openssl-dev libncurses5-dev pkg-config libudev-dev} 
*13. Lets go ahead and compile CGminer.
{cd cgminer} {./autogen.sh}

This should start ./cgminer up with some really basic settings, and not pointed at any pool. Lets fix that: First press [p] to go to pool settings Now [A] and enter the information for the 1st pool. For instance if you are signing on for dogehouse: (Input server details: stratum+tcp://stratum.dogehouse.org:3333 Username: 'yourusername.workername password: 'yourpassword') If you got no errors, you did it right! Your miner should now connect and start to mine very slowly.
Now, do the same thing for all your other pools. the reason we do this is because Doge Coin pools are constantly being DDoS attacked, and this way your worker automatically switches over to a good pool if one go's down.
*22. time to save your current settings press [Enter] to get back out to the main menu, then [s] to bring up settings. Now press [W] to write a Config file. Name it DogeCoin.conf, and make sure to save it in the location it directs you too.

To the moon! Dogemining with BFGMiner, Debian, and ATI.

Visitor from the future! Hello. I'm a newbie digger and recently setup my first dedicated mining box in Debian. I'm not the most experienced Linux user, but the machine had started with Debian Squeeze and I couldn't find its old Windows key. (Also please forgive formatting errors, I'm new to this whole "Reddit" thing as well.)
I found a number of guides to misdirect me on my way, so I decided to write up a sort-of (or at least hopefully up-to-date) guide to create a Dogecoin miner on Debian with AMD cards, using BFGMiner to mine coins.
Expert digging shibes: I would certainly appreciate feedback to improve this guide.
This is not a headless mining guide. I have not reached that level of mastery yet, though I believe it is well within reach.
HOWTO
You can refer to this wiki source to understand the output from BFGMiner 3.10.0. The one gotcha I've observed is that BFGMiner will happily start off showing hash rates in KHash/sec, and after the first accepted block it will jump to MHashes/sec. When I first saw my hash speed appear to drop from "250" to "0.2", I panicked a little before seeing it had changed its orders of magnitude.
If you think you're still mining slowly, you might need to bump up the intensity for BFGMiner. Higher intensity means more work, and it's possible to create hardware failures if you set it too high. For my HD 5870s, I use an intensity of 12. You can either set the intensity by adding "-I 12" to the ./bfgminer line of doge_dig.sh, or you can adjust the value by pressing M in BFGMiner and working through the menu system from there.
Bonus: Multiple cards
What happens if I have multiple ATI cards on one rig, you ask? I had the same problem, and OpenCL would only recognize one of them! It turns out that there's an easy solution, but it costs $1.25 in resistors from your local radio shack: http://www.overclock.net/t/384733/the-30-second-dummy-plug
Plug the finished product from there into your second card. If you have more than two cards, you'll need to make one for every card you want to recognize without a monitor attached to it. Reboot and restart your mining, BFGMiner should recognize all of your cards now.
In theory, the above technique should allow you to run completely headless, as long as you also install SSH and be sure to have your script export DISPLAY=:0 before running BFGMiner. I haven't tried this, though.

Reaper crashing during compile

Hey All,
I've been working on 2 mining rigs which are basically Windows 7 computers with new gfx cards- a 7970 and a 7950. Prior to installing the new cards my cpu which now has the 7950 was running flawlessly with a nvidia 460gxt.
Since switching the cards out, updating the drivers, etc., I ran into this problem where my reaper client crashes a few seconds after the kernel compiling phase starts. This happens only when Litecoin mining. Bitcoin mining protocol compiles quickly, and runs. I have tweaked config settings with no success. There are no error messages other than the windows notification that the program has stopped running. My config files are basically this:

I think it might have something to do with drivers, as the program responded slightly differently (read- crashed sooner) when I tried different gfx drivers. Currently installed are ATI 13.4 drivers. AMD SDK 2.8 has also been installed.
Any ideas? (sorry no pics as of now I will has access to the cpu late today)

Ubuntu Gnome hates me

Hi,
Before I start - a quick overview of my setup:
ATI Radeon HD6950 3 monitors - two on Display Port - one on HDMI by way of a mini display port adapter
The issue:
I can install Ubuntu Gnome without any major issue.
However, the fan on the gfx card is significantly louder than in Windows. The fan is running as loud as it does in Windows when I'm gaming. However, it's definitely not running at full speed as I ran some bitcoin mining thing on it once, and then it was truly running at full pelt - full on concorde take-off noise.
So, my searches lead to me believe ATI cards and Gnome are not friends. However, most of these posts (google searches bring up many forums / message boards / etc) end in 2012, when it looks like this issue was sorted.
I have tried Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 and 14.04.
Aside from the fan noise, I also find that my display settings aren't retained on reboot - such as the middle becomes the right, the right becomes the left, and the left becomes the middle.
Also, many weird things (I have no idea what, but plenty of messages with OOPS in them) pop up on log in.
And lastly, I have tried installing the Radeon driver from the ATI official site. When I do this, the desktop crashes to console after the mandatory installation reboot, and running startx etc just bombs back to console with a nasty error message (don't have that to hand as typing this from windows dual boot currently).
I have read you can use some unofficial radeon drivers, but that they manually stop the fan (?) and can lead to gfx cards burning out etc due to heat. Is there any truth in this? And where might I find / how might I install the unofficial drivers?
I really, really want to use Ubuntu Gnome on this PC as - as a software developer - it's so much more efficient, after having had it as my home desktop now for a good few weeks.
Any help gratefully appreciated - if I had any hair, it would have all been pulled out by now!

performance drop after gpu bitcoin mining, is this even possible?

first off: specs
I woke up one morning and my pc's performance in games reduced severely. The only major thing that I can remember doing the last time the PC was I was trying gpu bitcoin mining for the first time.
Things I did:
I don't think there was some sort of bitmining malware installed because there is no gpu activity when I'm not doing anything. Furthermore the instructions I used for the bitmining seems to be a well known one and not shady (mining.bitcoin.cz , I was using the guiminer)
What I'm thinking is maybe, somehow, the bitmining program messed with my directX libraries, or worse somehow damaged the graphics card physically. The thing is I tried installing a new game with steam (which takes care and install all the necessary specific version of required dll's for each individual game) and it still has the same problem.
To be honest I'm not sure what to test fodo from here. My only plan is if I can't get a solution, I'll do a clean reformat later today or tomorrow.

EDIT: turns out I set the cpu to power saving mode because I only needed the gpu working overnight, and forgot about it. It also explains why the performance drop is more significant in some games (I guess source engine games utilize the cpu quite a bit), I wasn't crazy after all.

[Build Ready] $1600 Desktop - Overclocking and Gaming. Linux Compatible?

Hi BuildAPC,
After dealing with Intel Integrated Graphics since 2010, I'm finally ready to build myself a desktop that can play modern games at higher than 20 FPS. I do plan to overclock, and I don't particularly like the idea of having a massive CPU cooler hanging off of my motherboard, so I went with the H100 water cooler.
The Sabertooth, I'm a little skeptical about, but the 5 year warranty is nice, I've personally always had excellent experiences with Asus Support, and the board is aesthetically pleasing to me.
The areas I'm really not sure on are the video card and power supply.
I've never had a computer with a dedicated graphics card, and I don't see any blatantly obvious reason to go with either nVidia or ATI, so any advice on which way to go would be much appreciated. I do plan on doing some Bitcoin mining with whatever card I get, at least until my Jalapeno gets here, and I do normally dual boot Windows 7 with either Arch or Fedora Linux, but I don't know what the current status of drivers is there.
For the power supply, PC Part Picker is estimating 350 W, but I know it'll go higher once I start overclocking. I realize it probably won't hit 1000, but when the price difference from 750 to 1000 W is $10.00, why not? Can anyone attest to how quiet this "Silent" power supply is? If it is too much overkill and not really quiet, could someone recommend a similarly priced, modular, 500W+, Efficency Certified, quiet PSU?
One idea that I've been working in is modding the Switch 810 so that the top vents instead of being manually controlled, would be automatically opened and closed by an AVR that draws power from the PSU and that measures the internal case temperature with a thermocouple. I'd then replace the vent handle with a three postion switch that sets the vents as open, closed, or automatically controlled. The only thing is, I don't have the case yet and the datasheet wasn't very clear on how the vents actuate. Does anyone have this case? If so, how does the open/close mechanism actually work?
Apologies for the essay and so many questions! Please let me know if there are any concerns or if there are other options that I should consider before I start this build. Thanks!

Slowness issue, looks like a CPU or motherboard fault but not 100% sure. Any advice/suggestions appreciated.

A corrupt bios. The multiplier is currently locked at x4 so I'm essentially running on a quarter of what I should be getting. It seems to be a bug with Asus M4A79T deluxe motherboard, one that usually crops up when the bios is updated, I guess I just got unlucky with that fecked up windows update and the power down screwed up the bios.
I'm having an issue with my PC and I'd like to get another opinion on it, mainly as the issue seems to be with the motherboard or processor and I don't have the money to replace both right now, only one. It'll be at least a month, probably two, before I'll have the cash to replace the second part. It's mainly a gaming PC and the problem is, it can't play games too well, even when I'm using RES on some of the image heavy subreddits scrolling down the page stalls for a second before jumping down and stalling again, that's with only one tab in chrome and nothing else running. The AMD page is a nightmare when I was trying to find drivers, took ages to load, it took the drop down menu ages to respond (3 to 4 seconds for it to register input)
So, what I'm asking is
  1. Is there anything I'm missing that might point to it being something other than the motherboard/CPU
  2. Between the CPU and motherboard, which is most likely at fault.
Right now I'm willing to buy one or the other, I'd like to replace the most likely part so I can get back to normal but I realise that it could be the wrong one or both could be defective.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated along with any suggestions for benchmarking/narrowing down the issue.

Non-tl;dr version below
I've had the system running for about 4 or 5 months and no issues, it would play any game I threw at it on high detail with a few exceptions. Tf2 ran great with everything set to full but now it's turned in to a jerky, stuttery mess, turning down the graphic settings makes a difference but not much. Same thing with Battlefield 3, settings turned way down, it's just about playable.
I tried bitcoin for awhile before and the hash rates on both cards are the same now as they where before. I didn't do much mining, only enough to get roughly two bitcoins and then just gave up as I became more interested in TF2. Other simpler games, like Revenge of the Titans, ran really well before, now when motr stuff happens on the screen the games start to slow down. Terraria still runs well but one I get to hell or area's with large amounts of lights or running fluid the game starts to stutter. This all seems to have started just after Rage, which also ran really well but I haven't tried it since. Windows installed an update one night when I was shutting down the PC so I left it to it, the next morning the PC was still on but unresponsive, black screen but fans still going. Okay, a bit strange but a powercycle should sort it out. The update didn't install properly so windows did a roll-back and attempted to install the update again later that night, the PC would turn off but the same thing would happen on start up, roll-back to a previous state, it was stuck in an install loop. I tried a few things to sort this out after a week of on/off attempts I managed to sort it out and was more or less back to normal. That's when I started noticing slowness in reddit and games. Due to work and other commitments I hadn't been getting much game time that month and hadn't even gone near TF2. A few more attempts to fix it (seemed like a graphic card driver issue) and I wasn't getting anywhere except a few blue screens. The only way out I had was a full reinstall, so I did that, on a spare hard drive I hadn't gotten around to using. The install went fine but the issue appeared again, same ones, slowness and jittering in games and RES. I tried different drivers from AMD, updating the BIOS and even another re-install but nothing helped. I'm left with a stable system but one that can't replicate what it once could do. I thought more RAM would help so I've gone from 4GB to 12GB and it's done feck all. Battlefield 3 runs but not when I try to use Vent at the same time, the game starts up and it's just a black screen and then it crashes.

Why does it show as a trojan/virus? This is a false-positive that many of the popular antivirus programs report. For now you can ignore it, or try another free antivirus, like Microsoft Security Essentials. Hackers use something similar programs to make money off of people's computers, so that is why it shows up as a virus.
Why does Chrome block the download as malicious? This is another false-positive. Simply, go to your Chrome settings, scroll to the bottom and click on "Show Advanced Settings". Go to the Privacy section and uncheck "Enable phishing and malware protection". You will only do this temporarily. Then proceed to download our software. Then return to your privacy settings and recheck Enable Phishing to further protect you.

troubleshooting graphics update from 4870 to 6870

I thought updating my graphics card would be simple since I was going from a Sapphire Vapor-X HD 4870 to a Sapphire Toxic HD 6870 but alas...
Original Setup: *GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 (using original bios) *SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 4870 *Windows 7 Ultimate (last updated in January) *ATI Catalyst 11.2 *ATI Stream SDK 2.2
So then I try to swap the card to the Toxic HD 6870 and the drivers appeared to be not working so I proceeded to (in this order): *Updating ATI Catalyst to 11.5 *Running Windows Update *Flashing my motherboard BIOS to the latest *Updating to ATI Stream SDK 2.4
I am finding my system has a lots of slowdowns and keeps locking up for no reason (one reason why I thought the bios needed a flash). I've been able to play games but I can't use OpenCL for some reason (bitcoin mining). My only plan right now is to try to uninstall Catalyst 11.5 and use 11.2 again.. any ideas ?
Update: It looks like my drivers are not updating. In dxdiag I'm getting a Driver date of 1/26/2011 and DDI version 10.1 :(

This just got cross posted to /sysadmin ; as a fellow research-field oriented sysadmin it gets worse... I too started in the Quake/HL/CS/TF timeframe, but got my degree in CompSci. Have you ever dealt with mice (the mammal kind; I've got worse stories)? Certs: just got my RHCSA this year. I've got the RHCE scheduled for october, and I'm studying for the CCNA, though I use HP switches.
How do you backup desktops / servers? Backups: Luckily, I don't do desktop support. We have another IT group that does that, I'm completely independent from them and I only have to take care of servers (and my own desktop). The physical servers are backed up to tape with Bacula. Our virtual servers are backed up with Veeam. My own desktop is backed up to my NAS share using synctoy (yes, i use windows on my desktop).
How much disk space do you have in one server? One off systems: As in physical servers built by hand? 0. I'm pretty much a Fujitsu shop with a few Dells. I definitely don't have time to be piecing servers together. disk space: only a few TB per server. I think the better answer would be that we have an Isilon X200 cluster that is 140 TB.

I guess in that case I only manage a handful of physical servers and a few VMs that are made for running one special piece of software or analyze data from one piece of scientific equipment. We have many other scientific devices that are attached to PCs that are "community" devices, but I don't have to manage them. and we've got a microscopy group that is separate from me too, with their own machines and devices.
If you are moving to 1gbs are you looking to increase the MTU? I was working on that but had some issues with firewalls for my windows-putty users. First, just to clarify, we're going to 10G from the 1G we have right now. I'm not our main network guy, so I'm not entirely sure but I doubt we'll change the MTU simply because we don't have a remote site so the majority of our traffic is regular internet traffic.
As for our backend network, I do use jumbo frames on a couple VLANs for our storage.

In short, Dustin echos the enthusiast community's frustration with overclocking headroom decreases from Sandy Bridge Ivy Bridge Haswell. It seems like IPC has gone up but maximum frequency has gone down so the ratio seems almost 1:1. Then there is the issue of the use of TIM and IHS glue cap that caused some to delid their CPUs (and void their warranties). Question 1: What are your thoughts on the overclocking headroom decreases that we've seen? Question 2: Is Intel doing enough to cater to the enthusiast community? Question 3: How do you feel about the delay in the release of Enthusiast parts by Intel (Sandy Bridge-E & Ivy Bridge-E) versus mainstream parts (Sandy, Ivy, and Haswell)? Intel makes good chips and they do keep pushing technology forward, but they will never do overclockers any favors. They will always be doing whatever they can to make money. AMD will also do the same thing. Intel seems to think enthusiast solely means "deep pockets". At the same time, there always seems to be a lot of "the sky is falling" reporting done by many tech journalists. Intel hasn't completely forgotten about overclockers and I don't think they ever will completely let that group disappear. And really, what incentive does Intel have to completely lock out overclockers? Sure, deny us our warranty, we'll go ahead and buy another chip and give you more money. How could you deny that as a company? as for overclocking headroom decreases, one can only hope that means we've got a whole new architecture coming out soon, something like the transition from Pentium 4 to Core.
Do you have a home lab setup to learn/test on? If so, what does it consist of? At home I've got a 1u dell poweredge sitting in a closet which is my main server. I run bageez.us off it which was supposed to be my way of giving back to the community, by running a Linux torrent site. Other than that I've got two htpcs running Debian, a desktop windows machine for gaming/reviewing hardware, and a file server with 8 tb running Debian and KVM with a few Debian VMS.
Do you still have that site going? I tried your link but it didn't work. Looks like I let the SSL cert expire. I'll fix that tomorrow. It works on my end but I think I want to recode a few things and possibly get it to work with other trackers. Right now the torrents will only work with my local tracker.

I guess I didn't specify that did I? I ask the question because I've been doing mostly Windows sysadmin duties for about 2 years and some linux admin stuff. I'm falling in love with Linux and I would love to have a job dedicated to just *nix What advise/suggestions would you give someone that is wanting to make the transition? I think what really got me the best knowledge was forcing myself to use a "less polished" distro as my main rig for a few years. Once you are forced to learn, you'll learn quickly. Picking up an rhcsa book will help too even if you don't plan on taking the exam. Go through it and do the exercises. Install a distro, set it up, then format and do it all over. You can use virtual box for the same result without killing your main rig.
Do you still use FreeBSD? If so, what exactly do you use it for now? No, but I wish I did. I stopped using it because the GPU support in Linux was better on my desktop, and now I work mostly with CentOS, and it would be a lot of work to change 100ish servers over to FreeBSD.
What did you use to train yourself in everything? Just break and fix? Pretty much just the experience of using it daily on my desktop for years. Running gentoo and Slackware really gets you used to doing things for yourself.
Configuration management of choice for those 18 servers? I'm just a jack of all trades sysadmin with a strong focus on problem solving. Are you trying to cure cancer with those 18 nodes or mining bitcoins? I started playing around with puppet but haven't really gotten the hang of it. Right now the cluster is running ROCKS with Grid Engine, and I just use the rocks commands to provision/wipe nodes.
What's the hardest part about getting started with puppet? I think its mostly just finding the time to sit down and have enough time to emerse myself in it.
700+ centos nodes across a few clusters here and I'm loving ansible. Nice. I've heard that ROCKS becomes a bear at scale, but for now it's pretty simple and quick. My plan is to keep adding another 18 nodes every year (one full blade cluster) every year, as long as I can get funding, so I'm keeping my eyes open for other solutions for provisioning. Bright cluster manager is another one I have on my radar.
Computer didn't work for 5 months (it started then after i downloaded skyrim from steam it shut off, then finally worked last month). Put my new graphics card in, then problems ensued. Here: Link to www.reddit.com. 1st step i'd do is remove all nonessential parts from the computer. Leave the cpu and 1 stick of ram. Pull out the graphics card, don't connect any hard drives or cd drives. On the back, connect the monitor to the on board video card and connect the keyboard. Does it power on? Do you get any error messages other than it saying there is no OS? Then power down and connect things one by one until you figure out what part is causing the problem. If you think it's the drivers, you can boot into safe mode (i hope windows 8 still has that, press f8 while booting), then run Driver Sweeper, to remove the graphics drivers. I haven't tried this on windows 8 so i'm not sure if it will run or not. I don't think you need to do a full format and reinstall.

(i did contact nvidia team for help, they just told me to delete old drivers without any other help then those words). How come you have a 3770k but only 4GB of RAM and a 6870? Seems a little overpowered in the CPU category. For benchmarking, mainly. The 3770k was our standard platform for reviews when I bought it. The rest is leftovers from various reviews. We don't get paid, so basically we work for hardware when we write reviews, more or less.
Wait when you review hardware you get stuff? Yes, hardware vendors provide review samples.
Have you ever had an OEM send you equipment different from the consumer version? (Say a factory overclocked version) and claiming it was the standard. Nope. Even if they did, we'd certainly review it as the hardware is, not as they intended it to be.

Well, it would work just as it does on any other group of computers. I'd have to run one client on each computer and they'd all check back to get their own workloads, so it would really take out the "cluster" usage and turn them just into regular blade servers.

How did you prove yourself to be worthy of that initial Jr. Sys. Admin job? I listed everything I could think of that I've done that was computesysadmin related. I had administered several web servers over the years, and experimented with many different distributions as my daily driver on my main desktop, so I was very comfortable on the command line and with day to day tasks. I was asked a few 'test' questions on the interview but I think they were more to gauge exactly what i did and didn't have experience with, not so much to make or break me.
Lastly, congrats on doing what you love for a living. Cheers to your future. And thanks. i definitely wake up in the morning with a different attitude than i used to, and that makes a big difference.
Configuration Management / Vagrant / Clouds. I have start playing with configuration management, but haven't gotten anything in production yet. I only provision new VMs every once in a while, and once the computer nodes are up they are pretty stable.

How do you feel about some distros moving away from init.d and going to systemd? I like init.d because it's what I know. Systemd is just a different way of doing things, I'm sure I'll like it once I learn it.
As a OCF Member I have to ask, What is the most extreme cooling you have dealt with?(LN2, Phase Change, Water, D-Ice, etc.) LN2, at the benching party in philly last year. If it's not on my computer or benching station, it's in my closet. Where does a young grasshopper starts to learn all of these materials wise one? Well, you could get yourself a RHCSA prep book (linked to the one i have and found useful) and go through all of the exercises. The way I learned was basically to set up my own servers, either physical or virtual, at home, and run them. I think FreeBSD, Gentoo, and Slackware were the most beneficial to me in that they don't really make choices for you, so you have to configure things for yourself which forces you to read the documentation and learn. They all have excellent documentation, btw. If you want to go a step further, linux from scratch will really teach you about the operating system from the ground up.
From there, come up with little projects for yourself. Like making a home NAS, setup NFS and Samba shares, install XBMC on a HTPC and hook it up to your tv to stream movies and music. Setup a webserver and owncloud. Stuff like that.
Sorry I'm late but... how old were you when you first starting tinkering with Linux and such? I'd like to be a sysadmin or similar when I finish school so I figured you were the right person to ask. I was 19 when I first made that half life/counterstrike server. I didn't even know what ssh was and it took a good amount of explaining for me to finally understand. The freebsd documentation is amazing and will walk you through just about everything step by step. To get NAT configured I had to use another how to but setting up that server taught me a ton.
Are you an Nvidia or an AMD guy? It's changed several times over the years. I used to be solely Nvidia because of Linux, but AMD has been stepping up their game and getting their drivers usable, so I currently run all AMD.
How much of a PITA is it for you to be HIPAA compliant? It's not really that tough. Luckily there's only a couple projects going on right now that have special needs above and beyond regular security needs.
What do you use for storage? We have a few Jetstor SANs, a couple Promise RAID boxes, and an Equallogic box as our VMWare backend. But our main mass storage is Isilon X200.

I'm not very familiar with that chip specifically so I'd check hwbot to see what other people have posted and go by that. 1.6, that seems a bit high for my 212 EVO, a few days ago I did have it at 1.18 without any WHEA 20 errors. That's why I'm saying take it slow, one step at a time.

Describe a SHTF moment at your work place. I can imagine it must be highly stressful being the sole responsible person to keep all that gear running. I definitely have a few and luckily they aren't that bad. One of my first few months, I decided to connect this wireless ap to the network to test it out one morning. As I was being awesome managing the cable to make it look clean, one of the security guards came into the server room and said they had no internet. I looked at our switches and they were all lit up solid. By hooking up the ap, which had spanning tree turned on, I took down the network of the entire building.
Ouch...that's definitely a SHTF moment. glad you came out unscathed. Luckily, all I had to do was unplug it and everything went back to normal. I then set up a spare switch at my desk and played with it before figuring out that STP needed to be disabled on the AP. Now it's been running for over a year without incident.
